An assembly method is disclosed for an axial flux stator housing chamber comprising radial walls 426,428 and inner and outer side walls 422,424, containing a set of coils wound on respective stator bars 432a,432b disposed circumferentially at intervals about an axis of the machine, collapsible elements 502,504 on the radial walls 428,426 facing said side walls 422,424. Attaching the side and radial walls comprises controlling one or both of a spacing and a degree of parallelism of said first and second radial walls by controlled collapse of said collapsible elements under pressure 506, laser welding beams 508 tracking about the end walls circumferential edge. The collapsible elements may be provided only at one end of the radial walls or on the side walls (figs5b,5c). In an alternative embodiment, a stator housing chamber comprising two clam shells 540,542 with collapsible elements 546 formed on one of the shells. Fig 7 (not shown) discloses an assembly jig. The radial walls may be of high temperature thermoplastic polymer e.g. PPA and the collapsible elements a polymer formation. Alternatively the collapsible element may be an adhesive e.g. when the walls are metal. Fig 4 (not shown) is an exploded view of an assembled machine. |
