Apparatus for continuously and consecutively mixing and plasticising plastics material comprises a mixing section 1 and plasticising section 2, the former section being divided into mixing zones 1a, 1b, lc alternating with conveying zones Id, 1e, 1f. Plastics material is fed from hopper 3 into casing 6 and is conveyed by rotatable screw or intermeshing screw elements through sections 1, 2. The mixing zones may be formed by the cutting of channels in the conveying screw element or intermeshing screw elements so that substantially no conveying action compared with the rate of throughput of material occurs in these zones. Additional components may be introduced into the casing through inlets 4 and the casing may be provided with fixed flights for co-operating with the rotable screw elements. The screw shaft(s) and the walls of the casing may be constructed so as to allow the passage of heat transfer media therethrough to cool the material being processed. The plasticising section may comprise screw elements.
