A method of ion mobility spectrometry is disclosed comprising determining whether a sample comprises ions having a first characteristic, and in the event that it is determined that the sample comprises ions having the first characteristic, applying thermal energy together with a radio frequency, RF, electric field to parent ions so as to modify them, e.g. through fragmentation, and obtain daughter ions having a second characteristic. The identity of the parent ions may then be inferred based on the first and second characteristics. The RF field may be generated by applying a suitable voltage to a RF grid electrode 126 within the drift chamber 104 of the spectrometer 100. Thermal energy can be provided using a heater 127 in the form of a resistive electrical conductor which may form part of the RF electrode 126. |
