The present invention relates to a method for performing a reference measurement on a sensor of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle during a coasting step of the internal combustion engine, in order to detect measurement errors of the sensor. In the method, future coasting steps of the internal combustion engine and the duration of the coasting steps are predicted on the basis of driving route data, and a reference measurement on the sensor is carried out only when the predicted duration of the coasting steps is long enough to carry out the reference measurement completely. Moreover, the present invention relates to a corresponding apparatus to perform a method in accordance with the present invention. With the method and the apparatus presented, the functioning of sensors can be monitored during a coasting step of a vehicle having an internal combustion engine. |
