摘要 Devices and methods for performing dielectrophoresis are described. The devices contain sample channel which is separated by physical barriers from electrode channels which receive electrodes. The devices and methods may be used for the separation and analysis of particles in solution, including the separation and isolation of cells of a specific type. As the electrodes do not make contact with the sample, electrode fouling is avoided and sample integrity is better maintained.

A method for separating particles in solution comprising: providing a sample containing particles to be separated; providing a dielectrophoresis device comprising: a channel for receiving a sample;a first electrode channel having a first fluid for receiving a first electrode;a first insulating physical barrier between the first electrode channel and the channel for receiving a sample;a second electrode channel having a second fluid for receiving a second electrode; anda second insulating physical barrier between the second electrode channel and the channel for receiving a sample, wherein application of an alternating current to the electrodes causes their capacitive coupling to the main channel and an electric field is induced across the sample fluid; introducing the sample into the channel for receiving the sample in a manner that causes the sample to flow through the channel, wherein the first and second insulating physical barriers completely prevent the first and second fluids from contacting the sample; applying an alternating electrical current to the electrodes, whereby the electrical current creates a nonuniform electric field that affects the movement of the particles to be separated differently than it affects the movement of other particles in the sample; and isolating the particles to be separated.
