The invention also provides for methods of use of such formulations.

A method for enhancing the recovery of oil from an oil-containing reservoir wherein the permeability of the reservoir rock surface is reduced by oil retained on the reservoir rock surface, comprising: directing a molecular chisel formulation to contact the reservoir rock surface, thereby rendering the reservoir rock surface water wet and impairing the attachment of oil thereto, wherein the molecular chisel formulation comprises a polymer having one or more binding points with a high affinity for the surface, and one or more hydrophilic segments that form a hydrophilic coating on the surface; and recovering the oil from the oil-containing reservoir after the attachment of the oil to the reservoir rock surface has been impaired by the preceding step, wherein the polymer comprises polyphosphoric acid (PPA).
