[Also in Division F1] In a submersible pump assembly for pumping fluid cargo from the tank 13 of a ship, comprising a pump impeller 32 driven by an hydraulic motor 33. the fluid to be pumped, e.g. oil, solvent, heated molasses or liquefied gases, is separated from the motor driving fluid, e.g. oil, by a zone which is maintained at a relatively low pressure so that any leakage of the fluids collects in the zone from where it is intermittently removed as by a remotely-controlled ejector 72. The zone includes a drainage chamber 55 surrounding the shaft 14 between two sets of shaft seals 51, 52 and 53, 54, and a chamber 68 surrounding a chamber 64 containing the motor 33. The motor receives driving oil through a conduit 37 and discharges the spent oil through the chamber 64 and a conduit 38. The chambers 55, 68 are communicated via a pipe 69 and are kept at the relatively low pressure by communicating them with atmospheric pressure via a long pipe 24 which extends upwardly to a hatch cover at the top of the tank 13.</p> |
