Disclosed is a method for generating a digital stereoscopic video stream (101) comprising container frames (C). The container frames (C) comprise information about a right image (R) and a left image (L). The method includes, when coding the digital stereoscopic video stream (101), entering into the video stream at least one metadatum (M) which is adapted to identify a region of a container frame (C) containing only one of the two images (L,R). The metadatum (M) may conform to the H.264/AVC standard and define a cropping rectangle according to this standard except that the cropping rectangle may be defined such that it delimits a single image of the stereoscopic container frame. The cropping rectangle may then be used to generate a 2D video stream from the 3D stereoscopic video stream. The metadatum (M) may be ignored in order to reproduce the 3D stereoscopic video stream.
