The hand held unit 10 moves a cursor or pointer around a three dimensional space displayed on a computer monitor. The hand held unit communicates using infra red and ultra sonic signals. The monitor has three infra red sensors 32A,B,C along its lower edge, together with an ultra sonic sensor 33 in the centre. The hand held 'mouse' has a pair of ultra sonic generators 11A,11B set at an angle to each other and a centre infra red emitter 12. Push buttons actuate the devices.
