In a method of transforming a coil of an inductive device, e.g. a stator 10 of a dynamoelectric machine, the device is arranged with at least one coil in a load circuit, a pulse of electrical energy is passed through the coil to transform it from one configuration to another, and the load circuit is connected subsequently with a test circuit to determine possible defects in the coil. A fixture 26 is placed in the bore 13 of the stator and a primary winding 30 thereon is inductively coupled with the coils of the stator winding 15. The winding 15 is short circuited and the pulse of electrical energy passed through the winding 30, thereby pushing away coil groups 16-19 of the winding 15 away from the stator bore 13. The load circuit is then automatically connected to a winding quality test circuit, which conducts a high potential voltage test between the winding 15 and the stator core 10. If there is no fault detected, the winding 30 is short circuited and a pulse of electrical energy of greater magnitude than the first pulse passed through the winding 15. The quality test between the winding 15 and the stator core 10 is then automatically repeated.
