PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for sorting useful sperm cells and an apparatus therefor.SOLUTION: A method for sorting a mixture of stained sperm cells having either characteristics A or characteristics B into at least one population, comprises: flowing a fluid stream containing stained sperm cells into a flow channel; exciting the fluorescence from the stained sperm cells having the characteristics A and the characteristics B flowing in the flow channel; detecting the excited fluorescence from the sperm cells; classifying based on the fluorescence the stained sperm cells as either cells having the characteristics A or cells having characteristics B; selecting based on the classification stained sperm cells in the flow channel; photodamaging the selected sperm cells to create a population enriched for either sperm cells having the characteristics A or sperm cells having the characteristics A.
