This liquid crystal display device is characterized in that: the device has a backlight unit (31), an optical conversion member (16), a polarization separation member (5), a liquid crystal cell (42) and a display side polarizer (46) disposed in this order; the backlight unit (31) is provided with a non-polarized blue light source (31A) and a reflective member (31C) that converts circularly polarized blue light to non-polarized blue light and reflects the same; the optical conversion member (16) includes circularly polarized light emitting fluorescent materials (17G, 17R) that emit green light and red light that are circularly polarized light in response to the non-polarized blue light; the polarization separation member is provided with a reflective polarizer (14) that separates the non-polarized blue light into right or left circularly polarized blue transmitted light and blue reflected light that is the other circularly polarized light and a λ/4 plate (12) that converts the blue transmitted light, green light, and red light which are the previously described circularly polarized light to blue light, green light, and red light, respectively, which are linearly polarized light; and the absorption axis of the display side polarizer is parallel to the oscillation direction of the blue light, green light, and red light which are linearly polarized light. |
