Apparatus for applying liquid adhesive has a pump chamber 22 for holding liquid adhesive for delivery, by gear pump rotors 24, 26, in determinable quantity to an applicator roll 12. In one form, solid rod adhesive is fed into inlet passage 32 by a pair of opposed rolls 62, 64 movable relative to each other, one at least being yieldable relative to the other. A sizing die 108 may be situated between the rolls 62, 64 and the inlet 32 to the pump chamber, and has a tapered passage 110 and heating cartridges 113 so that rods of slightly varying size may be accommodated and reshaped to the required size and cross-section of inlet 32. The pump chamber 22 is housed in a block 20 which also has a recess in which the transfer roll 12 is located so that its peripheral edge surface in eccentric in respect of the inner surface 42 of the recess. The roll 12 has a portion projecting from said recess for transferring adhesive supplied to a portion within the recess, to a workpiece held against the projecting portion thereof by a feed roll 14. The said recess is connected to the outlet from the pump chamber by a short passage 34 having a valve 45 for shutting off the flow of adhesive when the machine is stopped. Heating elements 38 are mounted in the block 20 for keeping the block, rotors and applicator roll 12 heated and melting the adhesive rod fed into the pump chamber. The workpiece feed roll is rotated at a constant speed but the speeds of the pump and the adhesive feed rolls may be varied. The apparatus can be adapted to use granular adhesive by a hopper feed device or premelted adhesive. |
