<p>This liquid crystal display device, which has a retardation film, a liquid crystal cell, and a backlight unit, the retardation film having a maximum value of light absorbance at 595±10 nm or 655±10 nm and satisfying formulas (1) and (2), and the backlight unit emitting light that is blue light having a light emission central wavelength in the wavelength band of 430-480 nm, green light having a light emission central wavelength in the wavelength band of 500-600 nm, and red light having a light emission central wavelength in the wavelength band of 600-650 nm, (whereαrepresents the maximum value of the light absorbance,α⊥represents the light absorbance for the wavelength at which the light absorbance reaches a maximum in a direction perpendicular to the direction at which the light absorbance reaches a maximum value, and Re(λ) represents the retardation in the in-plane direction at a wavelength ofλnm) is such that the black color shift when viewed obliquely and the front surface brightness are improved.
