1326640 A tool for connecting and disconnecting electrical components BURNDY CORP 23 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 50391/70 Heading B4C [Also in Division H2] A tool for attaching an elbow terminal 15 to, or removing such a terminal from, a transformer bushing 16 comprises a casing 10, an elongate tubular member F movable longitudinally relative to the casing between two limit positions by means of a compression spring mechanism, a rod 28 carrying two jaws 24 adapted to engage an opening 25 in a projection 23 of the elbow, means for moving the rod and jaws longitudinally relative to the tubular member F to cause closing and opening of the jaws, detent means for locking the tubular member in each of said two positions, and a trigger arrangement for releasing the detent means. The means for moving the rod longitudinally relative to the tubular member F includes a hand grip 14 which is rotatable relative to the casing 10. A sleeve 40 connected to the hand grip has a longitudinal slot 41 for receiving a pin 42 secured in a block 43 rotatably mounted on the rod 28. The pin 42 extends through a helical slot 47 in the tubular member F so that upon rotation of the hand grip, and as the member F is non-rotatable relative to its axis, the rod 28 will be moved longitudinally relative to the member F. The jaws 24, which are pivoted at 26, in the open condition extend through slots 30 in the member F, and, upon longitudinal movement of the rod 28 to the right (Fig. 8), edges 32 cam the jaws to their closed position. In use the part 20 of the casing 10 which is transparent is positioned over an elbow terminal attached to a transformer and the hand grip 14 is rotated to engage the jaws in the opening 25. The tubular member F is locked against movement relative to the casing away from the transformer by detent means which includes a sleeve 79 biased by a spring 80 to the position illustrated in which balls 76 are locked against radial outward movement. Movement of the lever 87 to the position illustrated in Fig. 4 moves ring 63 away from shoulder 60. Actuation of trigger 13 releases the detent means and results in rapid movement of the tubular member F and the rod 28 to the right. The elbow terminal is thus removed from the transformer, and the tubular member F is moved to the position of Fig. 5 in which, upon release of trigger 12, it is locked against movement to the left. For attaching an elbow terminal to a transformer the tool is operated similarly excepting that the tubular member is positioned as in Fig. 5 and the lever 87 is moved to a position (Fig. 6, not shown) in which the ring 64 is moved to the left and away from shoulder 61. Actuation of the trigger 13 will then permit the member F and the rod 28 to move to the left relative to the casing to effect the attachment. |
