<p>A method for propagating short optical pulses comprises constructing a composite pulse (22) comprising a probe pulse (10) flanked by a pair of guard pulses (16, 18) of different wavelength from the probe pulse. These pulses have respective temporal delays so that the composite pulse has a central portion in which the intensity is substantially constant with time. This protects the probe pulse from self-phase modulation (SPM) during propagation of the composite pulse through an optical fibre; only the external edges of the guard pulses undergo SPM. After propagation, the guard pulses are filtered out, leaving an undistorted probe pulse for detection. In some embodiments, the composite pulse contains a plurality of probe pulses, which may have different wavelengths. Various apparatus can be used for generation of the composite pulse.</p> |
