PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a card reader which processes a substantially rectangular IC card compliant with International Standard or JIS standard received in its short-side direction, configured to easily determine whether the IC card has been inserted in a correct direction or not.SOLUTION: The card reader includes a slot 3 where a card 2 incorporating an IC chip is inserted, a metal detection mechanism 10 for detecting an external connection terminal 2c of the IC chip formed in the card 2, and a tip detection mechanism 11 which detects a tip in an insertion direction of the card 2 to be inserted through the slot 3. In the card reader 1, the metal detection mechanism 10 and the tip detection mechanism 11 are arranged in positions where the metal detection mechanism 10 detects the external connection terminal 2c when the tip detection mechanism 11 detects the tip in the insertion direction of the card 2 inserted in a correct direction through the slot 3. |
