A head mountable display (HMD) is operable to detect the HMD's overall motion relative to its current orientation, and to display extra image material 630 so that the extra image material moves in the same general direction as real objects would be seen by the user to move if the user were not wearing the HMD. The extra image material is displayed around the periphery 620 of a virtual video screen 600. The effect of the invention may be to reduce motion sickness in a user of the display. The HMD may receive position data from a position sensor associated with a vehicle the HMD is situated in. The HMD may comprise a GPS detector. The HMD may have a camera mounted on it which may be used to detect its motion.
