<p>1284937 Knitting; finishing pile fabrics W BINDER 18 Aug 1969 [26 Aug 1968 17 Dec 1968] 41145/69 Headings D1C D1K and D1S A pile fabric comprises a thermoplastic yarn knitted to form long loops which are set, cut in one limb to form a barb and errected. The errected barbs so formed engage a loop pile fabric so that they together form a fastener. A weft knitted fabric comprises a basic yarn 3 knit on one bed only of a two bed machine and the thermoplastic yarn 6 knitted on that bed but held over several courses in wales 6" knit on the other. Courses of the thermoplastic yarn may be joined by an additional removable yarn 7. The fabric is then stretched and heated to take the desired shape, and cooled whereafter the held loops are cut at one side of the loop head, after removal of the additional thread if present. The fabric is stretched again to errect the barbs and then sized. Some or all of the courses of basic yarn may be knit with elastic yarn. Warp knitted fabrics may be knitted on a single or a double needle bed machine. In fabrics knit on a single bed the pile yarn is knit in spaced courses, and loops are formed by laps around pile instruments. If the fabric is knit on a two bed machine the pile-forming yarn 16 is anchored in the base fabric by knitting in one bed, and forms open loops 16" in spaced courses on the other. The open, pile-forming loops may be joined by a further yarn 17, which is removed to release the loops. Alternatively the pile loops joining one-another are run. In one arrangement for knitting a warp fabric the long loops are passed around hooks 102 when they lap the needles. Sets of hooks are mounted in a rotatable drum 105 and projected by oil pressure. The oil is heated so that the loops are set as they are drawn by the hooks. In an alternative embodiment the long loops are layed around members (132 Fig. 16 not shown) behind the needles and projecting above the comb plate.
