PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide element having excellent optical multiplexing or optical demultiplexing characteristic.SOLUTION: An optical waveguide element according to the present invention is an optical waveguide element of multi-mode interference type comprising at least one or more input optical waveguides 1a connected to an input end face and at least one or more output optical waveguides 3a, 3b connected to an output end face, the output optical waveguides 3a, 3b never being one simultaneously with the input optical waveguide 1a, and having at least one of an optical multiplexing and an optical demultiplexing function, wherein the optical waveguide element is characterized in that the input optical waveguide 1a is located closer to the edge side than to the center of the input end face, and is connected to the input end face in such a way that its connecting position with the input end face is inclined so as to escape further toward the edge side from the center. |
