1. A method for selectively binding and separating phosphate anions from a liquid medium, said method comprising:
(a) providing a cross-linked molecularly imprinted polymer comprising cross-linked molecularly imprinted chitosan having complementary molecular cavities having a selective binding affinity for phosphate ions, phosphate containing molecules, or a combination of both; and (b) contacting the cross-linked molecularly imprinted polymer with the liquid medium, wherein any phosphate ions, phosphate containing molecules, or a combination of both present in the liquid medium are selectively removed from the liquid medium and sequestered in the cross-linked molecularly imprinted polymer. |
