<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent useless consumption of liquid by efficiently discharging bubbles and foreign substances together with the liquid from a discharge port. <P>SOLUTION: A sub-tank communicates with an ink inflow channel via an ink supply pipe, and communicates with an exhaust channel via an ink return pipe. The ink inflow channel communicates with an ink outflow channel and the exhaust channel. The ink outflow channel communicates with a pressure chamber and a discrete ink channel including a discharge port. The ink supply pipe is provided with a purge pump, and the ink return pipe is provided with a circulation valve. In a state where the circulation valve is open, the purge pump is driven to circulate ink in the order of the sub-tank, the ink inflow channel and the exhaust channel. In this state, the circulation valve is closed and ink is discharged from a discharge port.
