1363542 Cutting tools SANDCO Ltd 30 May 1972 [28 May 1971 (2)] 25227/72 Heading B3B In a cutting tool having a releasable, indexable cutting insert, the insert is in the form of a rhombic configuration with parallel side faces 12, 13 with peripheral side edges 14, 15, 16 extending therebetween, the junctures between the side faces and side edges forming cutting edges 17 to 20. The edges 17, 18 and 19, 20 converge towards the longest diagonal of the rhombus to define cutting tips 28, 26 respectively which include an acute angle of less than 60 degrees. Cutting edges are provided on both side faces of the insert and chip controlling grooves 39 extend parallel to the cutting edges. Intermediate the two cutting tips and parallel to the longest diagonal of the rhombus, cutting edge portions 21, 22 are formed which connect the cutting edges which converge towards the tips. These portions perform auxiliary cutting action combined with the other cutting edges in use in a machining operation. In an alternative form of insert converging cutting edges are provided with alternate chip controlling grooves alternately on the respective side faces of the insert. The inserts, which are provided with a central hole extending between the side faces, are clamped in a recess in an end of a tool holder 10. The clamping action being provided by an L-shaped lever member 29 one arm 27 of which engages in the hole in the insert and the other arm 30 engaging a screw member in the holder, which when operated, pivots the lever about its heel 36 to urge the insert into the recess. |
