Methods and systems for adjusting fuel injection of an internal combustion engine are disclosed. In one example, a change in fuel pressure is scheduled when a number of pilot fuel injections provided by a fuel injector to a cylinder transitions from a first number during a first engine cycle to a second number during a second engine cycle. The methods and systems may reduce engine emissions and improve engine noise characteristics.

1. A method for fueling an engine, comprising:
supplying fuel to a cylinder based on a pressure output from a first table expressing fuel pressure as a function of a first number of pilot fuel injections supplied to the cylinder in a first mode; supplying fuel to the cylinder based on a pressure output from a second table expressing fuel pressure as a function of a second number of pilot fuel injections supplied to the cylinder in a second mode; and changing from the first mode to the second mode in response to a first condition when a control parameter is increasing.
