Neutralisation of Friedel-Crafts alkylation catalysts - with gaseous ammonia in aromatic hydrocarbon medium (BR 10.5.77)

Neutralisation of AlCl3/HCl Friedel-Crafts alkylation catalysts contg. aromatic and alkylaromatic hydrocarbons is carried out by uniformly dispersing the catalyst in an aromatic hydrocarbon medium, stirring the mixt. while adding a small excess of gaseous NH3, and separating the salts formed. The process is esp. useful for neutralising "red oils" from the alkylation of benzene with ethylene or propylene. Treatment with N2O is avoided; this minimises losses of alkylate product and avoids pollution problems.
