Metal chelates of formula (I), or the starting matls. from which they are derived, are used as siccatives for oxidatively-drying coating compsns., opt. together with other usual siccatives. M(AmmRnR'o) pXq (I) (M = Co, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zr; Am = an N-electron donor; R is an at least bidentate chelating agent; R1 = complex-bonded residue; m = 1 or 2; n = 1 or 2; o = 0-2; p = 3 to 3+; q = 0-3; X is a counter ion). (I) reduce drying times but dry through the whole thickess of the coating without causing wrinkles. They are less strongly coloured than conventional siccatives and less toxic than Pb cpds. |
