A vascular closure device 60 has a frame (62, figure 2) to which there is fitted a plurality of anchor elements 72, spaced radially around the frame. The closure device has a radial compression feature, either a memorised shape of small radius or a collar 76 through which the frame elements are withdrawn. The closure device is deployed in a lumen such that the anchor elements are embedded into the vessel wall. The radial compression feature causes the frame to compress radially, as a result of which the anchor elements will pull the vessel wall inwardly, thereby closing the vessel (figure 7). The frame may be a stent (10, figure 1) with barbed anchors extending radially there from; or it may be multiple arms of shape memory metal biased radially outwards (figure 2) and having barbs and stop plates 74 to limit penetration into the vessel wall. Thrombogenic fibres may be disposed on the frame. |
