A hydroxyflavone is reacted with a substituted alkyl halide. Preferably, an aqueous reaction medium is used, in particular an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide. Haloalcohols are suitable as alkyl halides. The water-soluble hydroxyflavone ethers prepared in this way preferably contain two free hydroxyl groups in the 5 and 3' positions and, where appropriate, a further hydroxyl group in the 7 position, which group is either free or bound to an organic radical. They have the same pharmacological effect as the starting compounds, which are practically insoluble in water.
