In the case of this sail, a number of "pockets" (open to one side) are attached to the mast in one or more rows. The wind pockets are made by a trapezoidal canvas piece being sewn on three sides into a rectangular recess in the sail. The purpose of the wind pockets is to take more wind behind the sail, to form a greater vacuum there and to thereby achieve higher speeds. At the boundaries of the wind pockets there are reinforcing tapes which prevent the wind pockets from being torn out. <IMAGE>
