Encoding input data comprising partitioning and/or combining input data to generate data portions 310, analysing the data portions to select a data format for encoding the data portion 320, encoding the data portion according to the chosen data format 330, and aggregating the encoded data portions together with a header which includes information indicating the encoding data format or encoding methods applied to each data portion and information indicating the partitioning or combination resulting in the data portions 340. Preferably, the input data is image, video or audio data and the data formats are colour spaces (e.g. YUV), pixel formats (e.g. I444), or audio formats. Optionally, the input data format may be included in the file header. The analysis may include Fourier analysis of image, video or audio data, a colour information analysis, pattern matching, rule-based analysis or entropy analysis of input data. Selection of the data format for encoding may be performed dynamically. The encoder preferably includes data compression. Corresponding decoders and decoding methods are disclosed. |
