<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element classified into an electron trapping type light emitting element according to a light emission mechanism, high in luminous efficiency, low in drive voltage and further long in service life. <P>SOLUTION: An organic EL element 1 of an electron trapping type light emitting element includes an anode 3, a cathode 4 and an organic layer 5 held therebetween, and the organic layer 5 includes a luminous layer 6 comprising a host material and a dopant material, an electron transport layer 7 and an electron injection layer 8 which are laminated in the order. The host material of the luminous layer 6, the electron transport layer 7 and the electron injection layer 8 satisfy relations of: Ip(ETL)-Ip(host)>0.25 eV; Ea(host)-Ea(ETL)<0.25 eV; and Ea(EIL)-Ea(ETL)<0.20 eV.
