A method for manipulating seed yield of a short day plant, the method comprising: (i) planting a seed of a short day plant and growing the plant under long day growing conditions comprising at least about 14 uninterrupted hours of light per day at a light intensity from about 1000 to about 2000 μmoles m−2s−1 until the plant has reached a growth stage of about V1 to V4; (ii) after the plant has reached a growth stage of about V1 to V4, growing the plant under short day growing conditions for about 3 to about 21 days; (iii) after growing the plant under short day growing conditions for about 3 to about 21 days, growing the plant under said long day growing conditions; and (iv) allowing seed to form, wherein more of said seed forms relative to a control plant grown for the same amount of time but without all of said steps (i)-(iii).
