PURPOSE:To obtain a highly reliable memory element having simple structure formed with no lubricant film by lowering the frictional coefficient of protective film and enhancing abrasion resistance. CONSTITUTION:The memory element comprises a magnetooptical recording film 2 including a magnetic layer and a protective layer 3 covering the magnetooptical recording film 2 formed on a substrate 1. The protective film 3 is formed of polyparaxylerene or a polyparaxylerene derivative containing no chlorine.
