A method for identifying a multi-component cutting tool assembly includes the steps of: receiving the indication of a desired characteristic of at least one among the cutting tool assembly or of a workpiece to be machined from a user; determining whether at least a portion of a first set among characteristics associated with a first component of the tool components corresponds to the desired characteristic; determining whether at least a portion of a second set among characteristics associated with a second component of the tool components corresponds to a portion of the first set of characteristics, grouping the first component and the second component together to form a combination; and allowing the user to identify the combination as the cutting tool assembly.
