This organic EL element has: an anode; a cathode; an organic light emitting layer, which is provided between the anode and the cathode, and which emits light due to recombination of holes injected from the anode and electrons injected from the cathode; and an electron transport layer, which is provided between the cathode and the organic light emitting layer, and which transports the electrons from the cathode to the organic light emitting layer. The electron transport layer is doped with an n-type dopant containing an electron-donating substance, and doping concentration of the n-type dopant is higher than the doping concentration at which light emitting efficiency of the organic light emitting layer is maximum.
