Prodn. of cis-2-butene-1,4-diol (I) comprises partial hydrogenation of 2-butyne-1,4-diol (II) using a known palladium-contg. catalyst in a solid bed, discontinuous process carried out to complete uptake of the hydrogen. Also claimed is a process for producing cis alkenes by partial hydrogenation of medium alkynes as above, in a discontinuous process using known, selective, palladium-contg., solid bed catalysts in aq. soln.
