563,158. Submarine repeaters. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. April 21, 1943, No. 6388. Convention date, April 21, 1942. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL] The elements of a repeater in a submarine cable are mounted in rigid cylinders connected together flexibly at their ends by springs g and contained in a housing built up from steel rings and having a copper sheath. When the repeater is assembled, the ends are closed, the housing is filled with nitrogen and the seal of a container of hygroscopic material in one of the cylinders is broken from outside. The humidity inside is measured electrically and the openings in the end closure are sealed off. A further seal comprising flexible insulating material is then fitted and the copper tube, to which the lead from the repeater casing is soldered, is spliced to the cable. The sealing arrangements are substantiallv the same as those described in Specification 545,846, [Group XXXVI], except that in the present case, the metal tube 90 surrounding the splice is corrugated to increase its flexibility. One of the cylinders contains a thermionic tube mounted by means of a sponge rubber cushion 820, Fig. 15, in an insulating ring 821. In this case, the cylinder is perforated to provide for cooling.
