Method for manufacturing a green tyre by wrapping a carcass reinforcing ply (N) on a tyre-building drum (2), on which several profiled elements (P) axially distant from one another are laid, in which method:•- the forward front of the carcass reinforcing ply (N) is grasped by a transport device (1) comprising a chassis (4) supporting a transverse row (5) of ply grasping pads,•- the carcass reinforcing ply (N) is transferred between a supply station and said drum,•- the forward front of said ply is laid down on the tyre-building drum (2),•- said transport device (1) is withdrawn,•- an applicator roller with a deformable profile is applied to the forward front of said ply and pressure is applied in the radial direction across the width of this ply while said drum is made to turn. At least one of the grasping pads mounted with the ability to move with respect to the adjacent pads between a position in which all the pads lie in one and the same plane and a second position in which at least said pad is offset heightwise with respect to the adjacent pads so as to adapt the profile of said transverse row (5) of pads to suit the curved profile of the meridian line (M) of said second laying surface. The invention also relates to a device for transporting a carcass reinforcing ply for said method. |
