1. A method for increasing short chain fatty acid concentration in the colon of a mammal and thereby improving bowel health of the mammal comprising
(a) orally administering to a mammal about 0.1 grams to about 50 grams of a composition comprising a treated bran product consisting essentially of dry-milled, partially-defatted, amylase- and protease-treated, alkali-solubilized, ethanol-precipitated bran comprising
at least one single β-D Xylp residue 1→3 linked to a corresponding 1→4 linked β-D Xylp residue of a polysaccharide backbone, wherein the total of single β-D Xylp residues comprises about 20-35% of total Xyl residues in the backbone, wherein the treated bran product further comprises about 50% to about 93% by weight of arabinoxylans; and (b) after the administering, fermenting the treated bran product in the colon of the mammal, whereby
(i) the fermenting of the treated bran product throughout the colon is slower than fermenting rapidly fermenting soluble dietary fibers throughout the colon,(ii) the fermenting of the treated bran product in the distal colon is faster than fermenting rapidly fermenting soluble dietary fibers in the distal colon,(iii) production of short chain fatty acid in the colon is increased compared to short chain fatty acid production during fermentation in the colon of rapidly fermenting soluble dietary fibers, and(iv) content of carbohydrate of the treated bran product is reduced during fermentation in the colon compared to carbohydrate content of rapidly fermenting soluble dietary fibers during fermentation in the colon. |
