The claims specify selecting a channel (e.g. SMS, XMPP) for delivering a message to a recipient based on the recipient devices preferences. Dependent claims specify considering delivery costs in channel selection, assessing channels using read receipts, harvesting source IDs from received messages and multicasting messages to multiple devices. The channels can include over the top (OTT) methods that utilise communication data allowances rather than messaging allowances. An advertising delivery system is also disclosed and includes opt-in/out procedures and assessing advert responsiveness with read receipts.
