A wireless communication system, using wireless base stations, and other devices, such as a relay node, interoperate with using spectrum aggregation and MIMO. Traffic usage is detected and based on channel utilization relative to capacity, spectrum aggregation is chosen over MIMO under certain conditions. On the other hand, under higher channel utilization system components switch to MIMO modes of operation to reduce demand on channel use, while providing good throughput for communications stations.

a digital processor configured to perform processing according to one of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication mode or a spectrum aggregation communication mode; and a control processor configured to
set one of the communication mode or the spectrum aggregation communication mode based on a detected status of a communication link between the electronic device and another electronic device;control transmitting signals according to the set communication mode; andcontrol transmitting a trigger signal via a Physical Shared Channel (PSCH), the trigger signal indicating a change of the communication mode; andcontrol transmitting the signals via one or more channel groups.
