An approach is provided causing, at least in part, a transmission of at least one message from a first device to a second device. The approach involves receiving at least one status message indicating, at least in part, compatibility information of the second device with one or more attributes of the at least one message. The approach further involves causing, at least in part, a presentation of a notification to the first device regarding the compatibility information based, at least in part, on the at least one status message.
