The present invention addresses the problem of providing a manufacturing method with which the performance and reliability of a polarizing element can be maintained since there is no side etching and separating of the anisotropic pigmented coating after application and formation, said method also being less susceptible to the effects of solvents or the like used in manufacturing processes following the formation of the anisotropic pigmented coating and allowing increased flexibility in the manufacturing processes. A polarizing element including a substrate, an anisotropic pigmented coating, and a resin composition layer, said polarizing element characterized in that the anisotropic pigmented coating and the resin composition layer are laminated in this order upon the substrate, the upper surface and entire side surfaces of the anisotropic pigmented coating are covered by the resin composition layer, and there is a section upon the substrate where the anisotropic pigmented coating and the resin composition layer are not formed.
