This invention relates to a method of making one or more organic acids. The method comprises contacting a pretreated biomass feedstock with one or more cellulolytic enzymes to saccharify the pretreated biomass material, and converting the product of saccharification to one or more organic acids utilizing a microorganism. The feedstock is pretreated with irradiation, sonication, oxidation, pyrolysis or steam explosion, and the biomass feedstock comprises a cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic material. This invention also relates to a method for producing a composite comprising compounding a material comprising a carbohydrate with a degradable polymer to produce the composite. |
