This wavelength conversion member (10A) is provided with a heat-conducting unit (17) having a recess, a light conduction path (18) which passes completely through the heat-conducting unit (17) and has a light emission opening on the recess side and a light incidence opening on the side opposite of the recess, and a wavelength conversion unit (14) which is at least partly embedded in the recess, is disposed in contact with the heat-conducting unit (17) and converts first light incident through the light conduction path (18) into second light of a different wavelength. The surface area of the portion of the wavelength conversion unit (14) in contact with the heat-conducting unit (17) is greater than the area of the emission opening of the light conduction path (18). The light conduction path (18) is configured from a transparent material with which the opening through the heat-conducting unit (17) is filled and which has higher heat conduction than air.
