An inflatable airbag with a central portion (5), as well as first and second ends (3, 4, figure 1). A first tether 14 and a second tether 15 each have one end attached at or adjacent the opposite air bag ends, with the other ends of both tethers attached to the central portion. Upon inflation of the air-bag, said tethers restrict movement of the airbag ends to produce bent portions 16, 17. The bent portions contact a vehicle forming a cavity 22 between said bent portions, central portion and part of the vehicle. Optionally, first and second tethers form portions of a single combined tether (29, figure 7) slideably attached to the central portion; alternatively first and third tethers (25, 27, figure 4) are provided spaced apart from one another at the upper and lower edges of the airbag; analogously second and fourth tethers (26, 28) may be provided; the airbag may bend about non-inflatable regions (10, 11, figure 1), cover the windscreen 18 and A-pillars 23, 24 for pedestrian protection, or be an interior side curtain. |
