Disclosed are a method and an apparatus to determine an intra prediction mode of an image encoding unit. The present invention determines candidate intra prediction modes of the encoding unit of a chrominance component including an intra prediction mode of the encoding unit of a brightness component and determines an intra prediction mode of the encoding unit of a chrominance component having a minimum cost by comparing costs of the encoding unit of the chrominance component according to the determined candidate intra prediction modes.
