The motor-driven rotary brush (23,28) is mounted on a slide (25) which itself is carried on a carriage (7) which can be driven by a motor along a beam bent into a circular arc. The slide (25) is guided on a straight guideway (12) which is horizontal in the bottom position of the carriage and vertical in the top position. The slid (25) is adjustable along the guideway (12) through a leadscrew and motor drive (18). The leadscrew can be axially displaced by an air cylinder arrangement (15) to provide a rapid approach and withdrawal movement of the slide relative to the work surface. By combined movement of the carriage (7) and slide (12) the rotary brush can be brought to bear on the base (F), corner (R) and periphery (S) of a workpiece (24) rotating on the mandrel (31).
