PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust purification for an internal combustion engine that can prevent deterioration of NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>purification performance due to oxygen poisoning of a NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>purification catalyst. SOLUTION: The exhaust purification device for the internal combustion engine includes: an NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>retainer disposed in an exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine; the NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>purification catalyst disposed in the exhaust passage in a region downstream than the NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>retainer; a bypass passage that branches off a branch area of the exhaust passage located between the NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>retainer and a NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>purification catalyst, and converges in a confluent section of the exhaust passage, which is located in a side more downstream than the NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>purification catalyst; and a switch valve that is disposed in the branch area and that flows an exhaust gas into either the NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>purification catalyst or the bypass passage. The exhaust purification device for the internal combustion engine retains the switch valve to a position where the exhaust gas flows into the bypass passage when the No<SB POS="POST">x</SB>retainer should retain NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>and switches the valve to a position where the exhaust gas flows into the NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>purification catalyst when NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>is discharged from the NO<SB POS="POST">x</SB>retainer.
