A vertical axis water turbine assembly with vertically disposed variable-pitch blades 20, wherein pitching of the blades is effected by guide means as the assembly rotates. The assembly may comprise a lower and/or an upper support, the blades being pivotally mounted with respect to these supports. The guide means is preferably mounted on the upper part of the blades, which may have a NACA profile. Movement of the blades is preferably controlled in specific regions in order to achieve maximum lift or no lift, the latter optionally combined with minimum drag. Blades may also be caused to flip about their pivot axis. The guide means may comprise a cam, which may in turn comprise a continuous track 50 and two discontinuous tracks 60, 62, wherein a first cam follower (36, fig. 2) runs in the continuous track and a second cam follower (38, fig. 2) runs in the two discontinuous tracks, both followers being offset from the pivot axis. |
